Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint - 1955
When the new Giulietta was unveiled by two Italian actors dressed up as Shakespeares famous characters Romeo & Juliet at the Turin Motor Show on April 21. 1954 is caused quite a sensation. Everybody found the lines from the pen of the young designer Franco Scaglione at the Bertone design studio beautiful and yet modern and orders immediately began to flow in although production didn’t start until 1955.
Chassis AR 1493 00349 is a very early 750B car from the pre-series at Bertone in Grugliasco, Piedmonte and among the very few of the old Giuliettas still in existence and it has a full documented history. It was delivered new to Sweden through the official Swedish Alfa importer- and dealer Bonniers AB owned and operated by sports car and F1 race driver Jo Bonnier.
First owner was Hans Just owner of Just Färgeri AB, a dye mill in Borås. Second owner was a Swedish physician who bought the car for his wife and they had it for the next 40 years. We shall not reveal the doctors name here. He is now in his 90s and he and his family have been most kind and helpful with information and photos. Although not covering more than 7.000 km during all these years they have cherished the little Giulietta.
#349 has all the distinct details and characteristics only found on the very early cars. Aluminium hood, aluminium door frame shields, small diameter Carello headlights, small red taillights, pull handle starter activation (no solenoid) and many other details. Many of these early cars have been converted to floor stick shift whereas this car still has its original and very well functioning column shift. Also the very early wheels with rounded edges are present. These rims are very rare and difficult to come by today.
The car is in excellent condition with only a few areas to improve, e.g. the interior fabric was redone by the doctor owner at a time when original materials were not available. They are now and can easily be sourced from Elvezio Esposito in Italy. The original engine runs perfect and the car is quite wonderful to drive.
We have the full history of this car with all owners and a lot of invoices going back to at least 1969. It also comes with the Certificate of Origin from Alfa Romeo documenting original engine etc. The exterior color is by mistake recorded in the factory files as being black. It has however never been black, but was delivered in Alfa red, which has been confirmed by the family of the first owner from 1955.
This is a rare chance for the true Alfa lover to acquire one the very first Giuliettas still in existence and with all the correct details preserved. The car is Mille Miglia eligible and would no doubt be a welcome entrant in many other classic events as well.
We have dedicated a separate webpage especially for this lovely Giulietta https://thm560.wixsite.com/alfa
